The DD 214 is a mission-critical document for veterans to obtain because it is the only authority the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) uses to verify a veteran’s military service and discharge role for VA benefits.

If you are an Air Force veteran, family member, or attorney, when you use milConnect’s Defense Personnel Records Information Retrieval System (DPRIS) page for Air Force records requests, your Official Military Personnel of the Air Force (OMPF) If you try to request documents from, you may encounter processing problems.
Once you submit your DD 214 application, you will be able to view and download it electronically within 24 to 48 hours.
Step 1: For online military records requests, go to the VA.gov website here and click the button that says “Go to milConnect.”
Step 2: Click “Sign In” at the top right of the page. If you have never registered before, please click the “Start Here” link for the new user.

Step #3: Enter your DS login information and click “Sign In”. This is the login you use to access the VA.gov website.
Step 6: Review the First Name, Last Name, SSN and make sure they are correct by default. Then enter your email address in both fields. Be sure to check the box for your service branch. Finally, select the military service records you are looking for in the Document Index section. Finally, click the “Create and submit request” button.
Step #7: If you have done it correctly, you will see the “OMPF Application Submitted” confirmation in green. You will also see your OMPF application as “Processing”. You will receive an email within 24-48 hours with instructions to download the pdf version of your DD214 online.
Step #8: Within 4-10 business days of submitting the Military Personnel Online Submission Application to DPRIS, you will receive an email notification to log back into milConnect, click on “Correspondence/Documentation” and then “ Defense Personnel Records Information Retrieval System ( DPRIS), and then “Request Personnel File.” Under the “Action” tab, you can click the link to download an electronic .pdf copy of your DD Form 214. .

*Pro tip: Once you receive an email from DPRIS asking you to log into MilConnect to download your military personnel file and DD 214, you have 10 calendar days to access your .pdf files. If you do not download your files within 10 calendar days of the email notification, or at least extend the expiration date in the system, you will lose your files.
