Basic Fingering Chart Euphonium Baritone Valve Trombone – I did a quick finger chart search just to provide information to a student, and was amazed at the variety of information available. There are so many fingering charts that have pictures, colored dots, and other ways to show what fingering is possible for certain notes, but I found many of them to be quite confusing and only cover a fairly limited range.

Below is a fingering chart for the bass EEb and BBb in the treble clef. I made this very simple as it only has the notes and finger numbers for each note below. I’ve included alternate fingerings for most notes because it’s sometimes useful to know them to help with intonation problems or troubleshoot a difficult fingering pattern. I also showed a more extended range, lower notes, and a higher register, as this is a fairly accepted range!

I expanded this idea to trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, tenor horn, and baritone because I thought it would be useful as well. Even if the instruments are in Bb or Eb, the finger patterns work as the written pitch for the instruments.

The upper and lower registers will often have alternate fingering patterns that I haven’t listed and the important thing in these registers is to consider which fingering will provide the most appropriate notes for you.

For ease, I have uploaded them as .pdf files. Please write to download, use, share or distribute freely as you wish. Other brass fingering charts don’t organize the notes in the series of overtones or according to valve combinations, which makes it more difficult to make sense of the notes and fingers on the baritone. , and how high or low each should be played. This free chart shows young musicians how the baritone notes are organized by fingers and parts, making it much easier to memorize them all!

As a bonus, everything fits easily on one page. This allows your band students to keep this chart on their music stand and use it often as a quick reference. I want to print these step-by-step finger diagrams for my entire band on cardstock and hand them out during the first week of school, along with the finger cards. It is a powerful combination!

Resources For Students

Check out the NinGenius Music App – a super FUN way to learn ALL the notes and fingers on the baritone/euphonium!

Baritone/euphonium students often learn the first 5 notes of the B-flat major scale very well, but are less confident with many other notes, especially in their extreme upper and lower ranges.

These note and fingering flash cards help both beginning and advanced players learn, memorize, and master each note. You might be surprised at what great visual readers they become after working with these for a few weeks!

Additionally, the fingering chart used for each note helps students better understand how the notes are arranged in the overtone series on the baritone/euphonium.

Trumpet Fingering Chart For All Twelve (12) Major Scales

The valve (finger) combinations used to play all the notes on the baritone/euphonium are shown at the bottom of each finger chart and are arranged from shortest (open) to longest (1-2-3) , similar to the positions of the trombone. Seeing this order of valve combinations helps baritone players memorize the fingers for chromatic movement.

You may notice that the distance between each valve combination is slightly larger than the previous one. This helps explain why some baritones have a fourth valve to accommodate the 1-3 and 1-2-3 combinations. (Optional fourth valve fingerings are shown in all StepWise tables.)

One of the great things about the StepWise graphs is that they show how “biased” each note is, or how high or low it needs to be “buzzed”. For example, to play the A-flat note shown in the graphic here, you would press down on the first valve and then turn the mouthpiece up to the third partial. Most fingering charts don’t show the critical element of playing the correct notes on the baritone/euphonium.
