Filling out an actual character sheet will help you identify parts of your character that you might be missing and is a great exercise to help strengthen your understanding of the game. There are a number of character sheets online, but we’ll be using the official version provided by Wizards of the Coast. You can download an editable PDF of the character sheet for free from Wizards. This is the only character sheet you will find in the player’s guide. The whole sheet consists of 3 pages, but if you don’t play spell checker you only need 2 pages. The PDF is a fillable form so you can enter values ​​into the document, but I only recommend this for things that never change, like your character’s name, ethnicity, and background.

Page 1 is the most important part of your character sheet because it contains a lot of information you’ll need to quickly reference on the table, including things like skill modifiers, your attacks, and your hit points.

The banner at the top of the first page gives more specific information about your personality: your name, your class, etc. Most of this information, such as your name, is unlikely to change, so these are good things to write in ink or write down in a PDF before printing. Below the efficiency bonus field is a block for saving throws. Each row corresponds to an ability score and includes a small circle and an underscore. The last part of the first column is a box called “Other Skills and Languages”. Use this field to record armor, language, tool, vehicle, weapon, and any other skill that does not include a saving throw or skill.

The second column is divided into three subsections, the first grouping several fields with a gray background. This section includes some important combat stats: armor class, starting bonus (usually a skill modifier), and speed (if you only have land speed, type a number, otherwise list each type and speed). The second section, specifically in the middle of the page, is the attack and spell box. The upper half of the chest is a table with three columns for recording your favorite attacks. These are usually weapon attacks or spells, so you might write something like “sword” in the first column, “+5” in the second column, and “1d8 + 3” in the third column. If you’re a spellcaster, you can write “spell attack” in the first column, spell attack modifier (dexterity bonus + spellcasting ability modifier) ​​in the second column, and “different” in the third column. The bottom of the box is free to use as you see fit. Make notes about your attacks, such as other abilities that may affect your attacks, bullet marking, or anything else you feel is important.

The lower part of the column is called equipment, it includes 5 coins of different denominations and a large open space. The third and final page is for spelling. If you’re not playing a character that can cast spells, don’t bother printing this page. If you’re a speller, read on.
