Chuseok and songpyeon Chuseok and songpyeon 1128: Songpyeon has a variety of fillings such as sesame seeds, black beans, mung beans, jujube and chestnut paste; 0052: A scene of women making songpyeon as displayed at the Korean Folk Village I visited; 0099: Songpyeon is a half-moon-shaped festive food traditionally eaten during Chuseok
The three-day harvest festival Chuseok is just around the corner.
This year it will be celebrated between September 20 and 22.
A scene of women making songpyeon as displayed at the Korean Folk Village I visited
According to Korean Women’s Association (KWA) vice-president Yoon Kum Ju, Chuseok, which is sometimes referred to as the Korean Thanksgiving, is a harvest festival celebrated at the same time as the Mid-Autumn Festival.
As stated on their Facebook page, the Korean Women’s Association (KWA) was established in December 2011 as a non-profitable organization with the objectives of promoting cooperation and interaction between association members and enhancing cultural exchange and friendship between the Korean community and other local & international communities in Malaysia.
Songpyeon is a half-moon-shaped festive food traditionally eaten during Chuseok
During the interview, Yoon and other members of KWA were kind enough to demonstrate how to make songpyeon.
They deftly shaped the tteok (rice cake) after stuffing it with fillings.
Songpyeon is a half-moon-shaped festive food traditionally eaten during Chuseok.
The skin is made from glutinous rice and is naturally-colored using mugwort for green and omija (Schisandra chinensis) berries for pink coloring.
It has a variety of fillings such as sesame seeds, black beans, mung beans, jujube and chestnut paste.
Yoon said that Koreans believe if you make beautiful songpyeon, you will have a beautiful daughter.
It looks so pretty and I love that it is naturally-colored.
I’m inspired to use the ingredients when I make glutinous rice balls for the winter solstice festival in addition to the butterfly pea flowers, carrot, Pandanus amaryllifolius plant, and purple and orange sweet potatoes I usually use for coloring.
Have you made or ate songpyeon before?
