Learning in children aged 6 to 7 is strongly influenced by three functions of attention: alertness, orientation and executive control. These functions share a close relationship with body mobility, such as the posture adopted or a request to remain still during tasks. The aim of this study (ClinicalTrials.gov) was to analyze the impact of body posture (standing versus sitting) and the impact of these imposed positions in relation to free body mobility on attention functions in children from 6 to 7 years old. Twenty-one children (11 girls) with an average age of 6.7 ± 0.6 years performed the children’s attention network test under three-body mobility conditions: sitting, standing and free to move. Three attention scores were calculated that separately reflect the performance of alertness, orientation and executive control. Overall, no differences in vigilance performance were found between the three physical mobility conditions. Moreover, our results suggest poor general orientation performance in children, regardless of body mobility status, which may be related to their young age. Finally, the children improved their executive control performance when standing still, likely due to improved arousal and mental state.

The ages of 6 and 7 are crucial for children’s fundamental learning. (Schneider) et al., 2004; Camos and Barrouillet, 2011). These children also begin to use more proactive cognitive control (Lucenet & Blaye, 2014; Gonthier et al., 2019), preparing for predictable task demands, which are known to require more mental effort, but also to be more demanding. effective in minimizing the effects of spurious information (Chevalier, 2015). These changes are accompanied by a significant increase in attentional performance (Mezzacappa, 2004). The developmental literature has consistently shown that executive functions and attentional components
