Global Warming Diagrams And Charts – The graph above compares the global surface temperature (red line) with the amount of solar energy received by the Earth (yellow line) in watts (units of power) per square meter since 1880. bold lines show 11-year average trends. An average of eleven years is used to reduce natural forest year-over-year in the data, making the underlying trends clearer.

The amount of solar energy received by the Earth has followed the Sun’s 11-year natural waxing and waning cycle, with no net increase since the 1950s. At the same time, global temperatures rose dramatically. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the Sun caused global warming in the last half century.

With heat waves, wildfires, hurricanes and other extreme weather making headlines, the devastation of climate change has become undeniable and inevitable. Who or what caused it?

Educator Guide: Graphing Global Temperature Trends

It seems like a simple enough question, but like most things about climate change, it gets more complicated the more you look at it. It turns out that there are many ways to split the debt.

Global Warming Diagrams And Charts

To illustrate this point, I’ve borrowed some charts from a recent research article by investment firm Morgan Stanley (with permission). They help distinguish who is emitting now from who has emitted in the past, who is emitting more and who less over time, and what fuels and activities are driving the changes.

None of this is original data – it’s all public – but putting these graphs in one place can help us think about the many different ways in which questions about responsibility for climate change can be explained.

America Israel Patent Law: The Ten Millionth U.s. Patent. Another Cause Of Global Warming?

If the question is which country or region emits the most greenhouse gases, the answer is … China, but the “Second Asia” is coming soon (although Europe is less and less).

If the question is which countries emit the most greenhouse gases per capita, the answer is the Americans, and by a pretty wide margin. (Canada and Australia also have high productivity per capita, as do several countries in the Middle East, which are not in this table.)

If the question is which region or country is responsible for most of the greenhouse gases that have been in the atmosphere for a long time, the answer was Europe…

… and even today it still is (including Russia and all of Eastern Europe), with North America and Asia second, according to our country in the data.

If the question arises as to which country is responsible for the most emissions, it is the US, almost twice as much as its closest competitor, China.

Climate Change: Where We Are In Seven Charts And What You Can Do To Help

If the question is which country or region is moving faster in the right direction, the answer is Europe. (Look at China – is it peak or break?)

If the question is which fuel has contributed the most to climate change, the answer, since the 21st century, is coal, followed by oil and natural gas.

Global Warming Diagrams And Charts

If the question is which sector of the economy contributes the most greenhouse gases, the answer is electricity and thermal energy.

A Picture Of Climate Change Is Worth 1,000 Words

This chart from our country in the data shows even more clearly that, globally, the growing demand for electricity and heating is the biggest driver of emissions, with growing traffic in second place.

Global Warming Diagrams And Charts

(Note that in the US the situation is different – emissions from transport are increasing and emissions from the electricity sector are decreasing. The lines have just crossed.)

The story these maps tell is familiar to people who have followed climate change for some time. Fossil industrial development came to the EU, then to North America, and just as it was happening in China, the world discovered that, yes, this development would destroy the atmosphere and destroy the biosphere. Moreover, the amount of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere means that society’s carbon budget is dangerously low. A development model with a proven track record of success has proven to be very dangerous if continued as in the past.

Global Warming Diagrams And Charts Tracking Progress To A Safe Climate

This is the new deal in China, with India, Vietnam and other countries trying to raise their citizens to the level of wealth and comfort enjoyed by those in the West. At the same time, it is mainly the developing economies that face the greatest risks of climate change, so they must change course, at their own risk.

In this desperate situation, the answer to the question of responsibility for climate change always exists, and yes, North America and the EU must acknowledge their historical responsibility for emissions. They eat up most of the carbon budget, developing in a way that has already affected billions of the world’s poor. In exchange for this wealth, they have a responsibility to help the economy grow
