This letter is the most important thing I send home all year round! I called this letter “parent homework,” and it was very popular with students. Please read the following before giving reasons why you think all teachers should send these letters home.
This letter serves several purposes, but the most important reason to send it home is to let parents know (from the first day of school) that you value your feedback. Parents should feel “heard” and their “voice” should be welcomed. When you send this letter home, you are giving them an opportunity to properly communicate with you. It also gives parents the comfort of entering their child’s details. Knowing that they shared this with you will prevent future relationship problems.
This letter will help you build a positive relationship with your parents and get to know your students better. There were years when I had 36 kids in my class!!! Reading these letters (most of them return within a few days of school), I got to know my students much faster. Bonus: You will also learn a lot about your parents, which will help you in your future relationship.
