Background: There seems to have been an issue on the 2016 and 2017 Macbook Pros where pressing the half-sized arrow keys didn’t always register, especially when the very top of the arrow went to h – press down upper or lower part of the arrow. I went through a new main problem and then a new device (upgraded from 2016 to 2017) but ran into this problem each time. For the first month or so, I thought I was just having trouble getting used to the small target (ie missing the key), but upon closer inspection, I noticed that as I reach down to the arrow keys with my thumb, I tend to hit the edge of the key. Worse: It doesn’t seem to be related to dust/debris on the keyboard, but it’s a first-day regeneration problem on many, if not all models.

Well… I’ve also had keys that don’t work for a day or two after replacing the top case. This is dust/debris. Sometimes it comes sooner, sometimes later, but eventually it comes. At least on the new Macbooks. Put the computer back for another top case. There is nothing else you can do.

The returned one had this problem as well… also the up and down arrow keys were very different from the others…

Um, that’s not good news. Did you have the US format? Also, specifically, were the up and down arrow keys not working on every press, or were they just having a noise problem?

I found this strange too, but my device had some problems, see: https:///thread…litch-freeze-can-someone-please-test.2129323/ … it was German format, yes it looks like this. the keys responded fine the week i had the mbp. the up and down keys just (compared to all the other keys) made a very unpleasant and loud click, which I found very annoying.

On the 2016 MBP, if I press the up or down arrow slowly/gently, it won’t register. The position of the key does not matter. It’s always been that way, but I never see a problem using it regularly…

My 2016 down arrow only cracks when I hit it low and soft, mid or normal, where it always registers. I don’t think it’s a problem. I could make a video similar to the one above showing the error on any 2016-2018 keyboard. Look closely at your finger, what the key or aluminum is hitting. This is a troll video, much different than random sticky keys or random keys that don’t register at all.

A slightly different sound makes sense. The physical device is different because of the small up and down keys. It also feels a bit tinny compared to the other keys. And it looks like they need to push a little harder. I suspect it’s because the keys are so small and I’m using less surface area to press my finger on.
