This Old Thing: Unusual lamp continues to attract attention

Q. My late great aunt gave me this oil lamp when I was a teenager. She was a collector of all sorts of antiques but I didn’t pay too much attention to its history at the time. I just liked it and wish I had been more attentive. Can you tell me something about it and give me an idea of its value? This Old Thing: Unusual lamp continues to attract attention

A. This unique design has been called a wedding or marriage oil lamp by collectors, presumably because the two fonts were joined together on a single base. It was made by Ripley & Co. in the U.S. around 1870 and there should be a patent date on the stem. The blue fonts held kerosene and the little central cup held matches to light the lamp. There should be a cover (usually missing) for the match holder which would significantly increase its value. These lamps also came in all white, all blue, clear or a combination of those colours. I notice you also have a wonderful pair of matched chimneys on your lamp, which are incredibly beautiful with the ‘pie crust’ tops and rare. Collectors fortunate to have the lamp and a pair of chimneys to display really enjoy having these lamps. The lamp itself comes with more desirable bases and with this one, it is worth about $650. The matched pair of chimneys and burners are also very desirable today and escalate the lamp’s total worth to as much as $1,200.

Q. I was so pleased to discover your column! My mother-in-law gave me this little vase many years ago. It stands about 15 cm tall (6 inches) and the only features you can’t see from the photo are the name ‘Wagner’ written beside the female portrait and a blue beehive-shaped stamp on the bottom. Can you tell me anything about it, including its approximate worth? Sharon, Stratford

A. This is a lovely and exquisite little piece you’ve inherited. The beehive mark indicates it is Royal Vienna porcelain made in Austria around 1890. This vase has a fabulous Roman-style shape and as the signature indicates, it is hand-painted by Wagner, who was among the best porcelain portrait painters of his time. This is really a miniature painting on porcelain. The portrait is beautifully done and framed with wonderfully ornate gold work. The condition of the vase and decoration is excellent. Its value today is less than it was prior to 2008 but it is still worth $650.

Q. I’ve been settling the estate of an old friend and in clearing out her residence came across these in a cupboard. What are they and are they worth anything? Nancy, Toronto

Q. I’ve been settling the estate of an old friend and in clearing out her residence came across these in a cupboard. What are they and are they worth anything? James, Coldwater, Ont.

A. You have a very nice and old pair of marked ‘Quezal’ electric lamp shades. The Quezal Art Glass & Decorating Company in Brooklyn, N.Y., was formed, in 1901 by previous employees of the more famous Tiffany glassworks. These shades, typical of their high quality in a pulled ‘feather’ pattern done using glass threads, were made in about 1910 and would have gone on an electric hanging light. The designs were actually advertised as being inspired by the Quetzal bird species. The iridescent gold background sets them off and it is nice to have a matching pair. They are attractive and desirable lighting up at $450. John Sewell is an antiques and fine art appraiser. To submit an item to his column, go to the ‘Contact John’ page at www.johnsewellantiques.ca. Please measure your piece, say when and how you got it, what you paid and list any identifying marks. A high-resolution jpeg photo must also be included. (Only email submissions accepted.) *Appraisal values are estimates only.* James, Coldwater, Ont.
