The first step in creating your resume is to use your resume format. This depends on your work experience and skills.

The reverse chronological format shows your career development – how you have grown professionally and expanded your work experience and knowledge base. For example, you can state that you worked as a cashier before becoming a receptionist and finally your current position as an administrative assistant.

On the other hand, the functional resume format groups your skills by type. You add sections like “administrative support” and “computer skills” where you list your abilities below.

This is a bad resume summary because it’s very vague – it doesn’t give any idea of who you are as an individual. Also considered generic. This is a good resume summary because it describes a little about you—you’re “organized” and “professional”—and describes some of the tasks you’ve performed.

The next step in creating a CV is listing your work experience. This includes your position title (see: The Right Way to List Job Titles on a Resume), the name of where you worked, and the length of time you worked.
It is important to use strong action verbs at the beginning of each item on the list. Don’t repeat or use the same verb too much – there are many to choose from! These verbs show the hiring manager that you can perform specific actions from “creating” to “evaluating” the offer.”
You should also quantify your resume whenever possible. This means that you need to add a number to your achievements, such as a dollar amount or a percentage. Quantifying your resume gives the hiring manager a more specific idea of your job performance. For example, say you “trained 2 employees,” “improved customer satisfaction by 20% by sending weekly company update emails,” or “saved the company $30,000 by changing scheduling software.”

You don’t always need a hard number or percentage. You can also state that you “arranged weekly meetings”, “wrote monthly emails” or “managed annual financial reports”.

Skills show the hiring manager what you can do for the company—without taking up too much space in the “work experience” section of your resume.
There are two types of skills – soft and hard. “Soft” skills are those that cannot be measured and better describe your personality. Examples include leadership, problem solving, and communication. In contrast, “hard” skills are those that are learned through formal education. Examples are information technology, programming languages, and certifications.

Administrative assistants generally do not require a college degree (although executive assistants do). However, a high school diploma or GED is required.
