The rolling film stove was first developed by James Cox. James (Jim) Cox began working as a design engineer, developing samples to test asphalt for highway construction. He worked with Shell Oil engineers and they modified the Blue M portable oven, this is where the interior design that is still used today came from. Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) measures the effect of heat and air on the rolling film of dynamic asphalt material that simulates the temporary aging of binders in hot asphalt during production, processing and laying operations. A flow of hot air is directed into the open glass bottles horizontally as they rotate on a carousel scale. The characteristics of the product are measured before and after conditioning to determine the value.

This new benchtop unit from ATS has a built-in computer for precise operation control, with a front-facing touch screen controller and an intuitive user interface with step-by-step operation. The guided menu allows quick and easy setup with minimal training required. Remote control functionality allows full user control and monitoring through an application on a smartphone or tablet. The built-in timer also allows time and date settings for automatic heating.

The Platinum RTD temperature sensor controls temperature to a specified and total temperature range from ambient to 200ºC (392ºF). The air pressure gauge ranges from 0 to 100psi (6.9 bar). A source of clean, dry air is required for operation. A flow meter is included with a range of 200 to 14,000 ml per minute. The revolving carousel can hold up to eight product bottles and has an updated locking system for easy bottle insertion and removal.

A special metal handle with a smooth rubber grip is available as an option for easy handling of hot bottles. Additional RTFO numbered bottles are available. Other optional accessories include a stainless steel cooling basket, designed for ASTM requirements to accommodate nine bottles, and a bottle holder, designed to fit RTFO bottles to remove the inner film.
