Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) is a private university located between Manchester and Hooksett, New Hampshire. The university is accredited by the New Gland Commission of Higher Education, along with national accreditation for some degrees in hospitality, health, education and business.

Accountant and his wife Gertrude Gittle Crockett Shapiro under the name New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science as an institution focused on teaching business processes. HAB Shapiro died in 1952; there were 25 students then, and his widow, who increasingly directed the school as her husband’s health declined, led the school until 1971 and served as president emeritus until 1986.

In 1961, the school was incorporated and merged into the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce. The state of New Hampshire gave the college its charter in 1963, giving it degree-granting authority. The first associate degrees were awarded that year, and the first bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 1966. The college became a non-profit institution under the Board of Trustees in September 1968, and its name was shortened to New Hampshire College in 1969.

The 1970s were a time of growth and change. The College moved in 1971 from its Manchester center to what is now a 300-acre campus on the Merrimack River on the northern border of Manchester and the town of Hooksett. The academic offer was expanded to include a Master of Business Administration program in 1974,

In 1981, New Hampshire College was authorized by the New Hampshire Legislature to offer Masters of Science degrees in business-related subjects and Masters of Human Services degrees. (All human services programs will be transferred to Springfield College in Massachusetts by the end of the decade.)

That same year, the school opened its North Campus on the site of the former Mount Saint Mary College, which had closed three years earlier. The North Campus became home to the Culinary Arts program, established in 1983.

This led to several major construction projects on the main campus in the mid-1990s: Washington Hall, a student residence; Webster Hall, home of the School of Business; Hospitality Cter, home to quill (student restaurant) and culinary arts programs; and Belknap Hall, now home to the Institute for Language Education, the School of Education, and several university offices. In 1995, New Hampshire College began offering online distance learning programs. In 1998, the school added a Ph.D. in Community Economic Development and a PhD in Business Administration.

New Hampshire College became Southern New Hampshire University on July 1, 2001. In the same year, the university completed a new dormitory, the New Castle Hall.

When nearby Notre Dame College closed, Notre Dame’s three graduate education programs and two undergraduate programs were transferred to SNHU.

By the time President Paul LeBlanc took over in 2003, SNHU was hit by the recession of the early 2000s, with tuition rising and Rollmt shrinking. LeBlanc addressed this in 2009 with an increased focus on the College of Online and Continuing Education. The department’s rapid revenue growth helped save the ailing main campus, where Rollmt broke in. SNHU has focused on increasing graduation rates and tailoring the online college to the needs of working adults who make up the majority of its students.

SNHU acquired the college’s aviation facilities (including a flight center, tower building, and hangar) at the Nashua Airport for $410,000 and enrolled up to 30 students in its bachelor’s degree in aviation and management.

To accommodate the new students, SNHU converted unused storage spaces on campus into classrooms, laboratories and a machine shop.

Snhu Announces Tuition Decreases For 2021

In November 2017, the university announced a $100 million project that would include 1,700 parking spaces and an additional 500 jobs at its central offices in Manchester to support the online college.

In 2017, a fire destroyed Greely Hall, one of the original residence halls on campus. The fire forced 50 students to evacuate to a nearby hotel (provided by the university) until new housing could be built. No one was injured and students returned to campus within two days of the fire to choose dormitories with additional space.

Unable to save the building, it was demolished to make room for the new Kingston Hall dormitory, which opened in August 2018. In addition to Greely Hall, Kingston Hall replaced three other original campus halls (Chocorua, Kearsarge, and Winnisquam hall). .

The three-year Honors Program is a customized, integrated academic experience offered over six semesters for business majors.
