Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) is a private university located between Manchester and Hooksett, New Hampshire. The university is accredited by the New gland Higher Education Commission, along with national accreditation for some hospitality, health, education and business degrees.

Accountant and his wife Gertrude Gittle Crockett Shapiro as an institution focused on business education under the name New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Sciences. H.A.B. Shapiro died in 1952; there were 25 breeds on the register at the time and his widow, who administered the school more and more as her husband’s health declined, led the school until 1971, continuing as president emeritus until 1986.

In 1961, the school was chartered and became the New Hampshire College of Accountancy and Commerce. The state of New Hampshire granted the college its charter in 1963, giving it degree-granting authority. The first associate degrees were awarded that year, and the first bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 1966. The college became a nonprofit institution under the Board of Trustees in September 1968, and its name was shortened to New Hampshire College in 1969.

The 1970s were a time of growth and change. The college moved from its central site in Manchester to its current 300-acre (120 ha) campus along the Merrimack River, on Manchester’s northern border with the town of Hooksett, in 1971. Academic offerings expanded with the Master of Business Administration program in 1974 Mr.

In 1981, New Hampshire College was authorized by the New Hampshire Legislature to offer master’s degrees in business-related subjects as well as master’s degrees in human services. (All human services programs will be transferred to Springfield College in Massachusetts by the decade.)

That same year, the college opened its North Campus on the site of the old Mount Saint Mary’s College, which had closed three years earlier. North Campus became home to the Culinary Arts Program, established in 1983.

This prompted several major construction projects on the main campus in the mid-1990s: Washington Hall, a dormitory; Webster Hall, home of the Business School; Cter Hospitality, home of Quill (a stud-run restaurant) and culinary arts programs; and Belknap Hall, which now houses the Institute for Language Studies, the School of Education, and a number of university offices. In 1995, New Hampshire College began offering distance learning programs via the Internet. In 1998, the school expanded academic degrees to include a Ph.D. in Community Economic Development and a Doctor of Business Administration.

When Paul LeBlanc took over in 2003, the recession of the early 2000s hit SNHU with increased tuition and increased numbers. LeBlanc addressed this in 2009 with an increased focus on the College of Online and Continuing Education. Revue’s rapid growth from the department helped save the struggling main campus, where rollmt had collapsed. SNHU is focused on increasing graduation rates and adapting the online college to meet the needs of working adults who make up the majority of the student body.

The old Shapiro Library reopened as the William S. and Joan Success Center, a conference room and meeting place for students, along with services for women, learning disabilities, veterans and other groups.

SNHU absorbed the faculty and staff of Daniel Webster College along with the lunch and flight programs, operating the college’s Nashua campus for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year after its subsidiary, ITT Technical Institute, filed for bankruptcy.

SNHU purchased the college’s aviation facilities (including a flight deck, tower building, and hangar) at the Nashua Airport for $410,000 and enrolled up to 30 students in their undergraduate flight management and control program.

To accommodate the new studs, SNHU converted an unused warehouse on campus into space for classrooms, labs and a machine shop.

In November 2017, the university announced a $100 million project involving 1,700 garages and 500 additional jobs at its Manchester head offices to support the online college.

In 2017, a fire gutted Greely Hall, one of the original residence halls on campus. The fire forced 50 horses to evacuate to a nearby hotel (provided by the university) until new accommodation could be secured. No one was injured, and students returned to campus housing within two days of the fire to choose dormitories with extra space.

No longer salvageable, the building was demolished to make way for a new residence hall, Kingston Hall, which opened in August 2018. In addition to Greely Hall, Kingston Hall replaced three other original residence halls on campus (Chocorua Hall, Kearsarge Hall, and Winnisquam).

In 2020, Presidt LeBlanc announced that the school was on track to reduce tuition to $10,000 per year, which required careful consideration of labor and programming inefficiencies.

Robert Frost Hall, named after the American poet Robert Frost, is located on the University’s main campus in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The three-year honors program is a specially designed integrated academic experience offered over six semesters for business majors. As a result, students earn a bachelor of business degree in three years instead of four. Started with a grant from the US Department of Education in 1995, SNHU offers similar accelerated programs for undergraduates that focus on creative writing and justice.

According to The Ctury Foundation, SNHU spent more than $11 million on advertising between August 2016 and January 2017, and only 18 CTS for every dollar was spent on tuition.

Southern New Hampshire University’s COCE offers programs online and at its three regional faculties. The university’s main campus serves as a regional hub, as well as satellite campuses in Salem, New Hampshire and Brunswick, Maine.

After Trinity College in Vermont closed in 2001, SNHU established the Vermont Center in Colchester, which houses the area’s graduate education program.

In response, President LeBlanc said that SNHU has “borrowed the best operating practices from the for-profit (customer service, data analysis, urgency and accountability) while avoiding the practices that cast them in such a bad light.”

SNHU’s College of the Americas (CfA) offers degrees that rely on competency-based learning rather than traditional credit hours based in part on programs at Western Governors University. In 2013, CfA was the first of its kind to receive federal approval from the US Department of Education. In 2017, it partnered with the US Office of Personnel Management, making all federal employees eligible for CfA courses.

Beginning in fall 2021, on-campus tuition will be reduced to $15,000 per year (and $10,000 per year for select programs).
