When can I renew my Delaware boat registration? As mentioned in the first part, Delaware boat registrations run on a calendar year. At the beginning of the middle of October, the renewal of registration is opened. So if your registration expires on December 31, you can renew from mid-October.

What information do I need to renew my Delaware boat registration? You will need information from your original registration, such as the hull number, boat registration number/DL and the exact name of the individual or company where your boat is registered.

I need to renew, but my address needs to be changed. How do I change my registration address?

Can I use your address for my registration? Yes. If you are a registered customer agent, you can use our registration address.

Can I deflag or cancel my Delaware vessel registration? Removing your Delaware Boat registration is commonly referred to as deflagrating your boat. As with the registry transfer, the process is easy. All you need is the registration number. This is the number that starts with DL on your registration card. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources (DNREC) may issue a removal letter.

If a vessel is used, the vessel’s registration card must be on board. If you are stopped by the Fish & Wildlife Service and do not have a valid registration card, a ticket may be issued. It is the responsibility of the vessel operator (not the owner) to ensure that the vessel is registered, has all required safety equipment, and that it is operated safely.

Your vessel must be registered in its “Principal Use State”. “State of Principal Use” means a state of waters in which a vessel is used or will be used during a calendar year. Delaware regulations state that if the vessel is used, docked or placed in the waters of this State for more than 60 consecutive days, Delaware is the “Principal State of Use”.

Registration numbers provide identification for the return of stolen or found boats. Registration also helps to locate people involved in boating accidents, identify vessels that call for assistance, and helps identify vessels that break the law. Registration fees are used to fund resource protection, educational programs, utility areas and their maintenance, and security patrols.

A. For vessels over 26 feet in length, you can “title” your vessel with the US Coast Guard. This is a federal filing process. USCG documentation is optional for recreational boats but mandatory for commercial vessels.
