Introduction. Templates are a special type of Word file that can contain text, styles, macros, keyboard shortcuts, custom tools, QAT and Ribbon customizations, and building blocks including AutoText entries for use in other documents.

A document created with a template will have access to all these features and a large part of your work to create a new document will be done for you if your templates are well thought out. You don’t need to use all (or any) of these features to help you and your colleagues. There are paper templates that share these resources with documents based on the template, and global templates that share resources with all documents.

This is an intermediate to advanced level tutorial and it is recommended that you do not attempt anything here until you have reviewed the content of the chapters.

Almost everything in this chapter applies to these later versions of the word. The file name extension is different that it is “.dotx” and “.dotm.” The file locations of templates with later versions of Windows and Word are very confusing, often in the user interface. A template remains a special type of Word document that creates a new document when you double-click on Windows instead of opening it. Both Word and Windows want to hide things from you because they think too much information is confusing. You may or may not agree with this wisdom. However, this chapter is written in the hope that you will discover some of this hidden information. Specifically:

When you are in an Explorer window with Word documents in them, the names show the addition of the three letters “.doc?” If not, to see this you need to go to the menu: View => Folder Options => View (tab). How To Create A Template In Word

Create a document from a document template – the attached template. In Word 97-2000, when you choose New under the File menu, you are shown templates from which to choose. All styles in the template used in the document (either in the template document or in the text you type or paste) are defined in the document and remain in the document even if the attachment is broken. If the style definition of a template is changed after it has been used in a document, the style used in the existing document will not change unless the template is re-pasted.
