Project Rubric Template – While instructors have many tasks to complete during the semester, including grading and assessment tasks, taking the time to create grading rubrics can benefit everyone involved in the course: students, teaching assistants, and instructors.

A rubric is a marking tool that identifies different criteria related to an assignment, assessment or learning outcome and states possible levels of achievement in a specific, clear and objective manner. Rubrics can be used to assess student work such as essays, group projects, and oral presentations. Rubrics are useful for instructors because they can help students communicate their expectations and evaluate student work fairly and effectively. Finally, rubrics can provide students with informative feedback not only about their strengths, but also about their weaknesses, so they can reflect on their performance and work on areas that need improvement.

The first step in the rubric creation process is to define the purpose of the task or assessment for which you are creating the rubric. To do this, consider the following questions:

The holistic rubric. A comprehensive rubric consists of a single scale and all criteria (clarity, organization, mechanics, etc.) to be included in the assessment are considered together. With a comprehensive rubric, the evaluator or rater assigns a single score (usually on a 1-4 or 1-6 point scale) based on an overall judgment of the student’s work. The rater matches the student’s entire work to a single description on the scale.

Analytical/descriptive rubric. An analytical rubric resembles a grid with the award criteria listed in the left column and the performance levels listed on the top row, often using numbers and/or descriptive labels. The cells in the middle of the column can be left blank or contain a description of how the specified criteria look for each performance level. Each criterion is scored separately when scored with an analytical rubric.

A one-point column. Similar to an analytical/descriptive rubric, it breaks down the elements of the task into different criteria. Detailed performance descriptions are for proficiency level only. A feedback space is provided for instructors to provide individualized feedback to help students improve and/or show where they excel beyond the competency descriptions.

Ask yourself: What knowledge and skills does the task/assessment require? Make a list of them, group and label them, and eliminate the non-critical ones. The list should not contain more than 6-7 criteria, but there is no need to include more. Useful techniques for defining grading criteria:

Meet The Single Point Rubric

Create statements of expected performance at each level of the rubric. For an analytic rubric, do this for each rubric-specific criteria. These descriptions help students understand your expectations and their performance against those expectations.

Start with Superior/Exemplary Work Category – What does it look like when a student achieves excellence in each category? Next, look at the “bottom” category – what does it look like if students are not meeting the learning goals in any way? Then add categories to each other.

Also, try out the new grid on a sample of student work. After pilot testing, review the results to consider its effectiveness and revise accordingly.
